Cinco de Mayo & Where to Go!

In the land of tequila, Mexican beer and tacos (ok, maybe that’s Mexico) there are ample places to hit up for a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Here are a few:

El Carmen
This place is the LA mecca for tequila (and where I will probably be this Thursday). The bartenders know their stuff and can whip up the best of the best in margaritas right in front of you. If tequila isn’t your thing, they have delicious sangria and a list of Mexican beers to quench your thirst. 8138 W. 3rd St., 323. 852.1552

El Coyote
This was the first Mexican spot I went to when I moved to LA. It’s an ethnic spot where the older waitresses wear hoop skirts and don’t care if they bump into you or not. Don’t worry though, The margaritas are so strong, you won’t feel a thing. 7312 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, 90036, 323.939.7766

Yxta Cocina Mexicana
This modern Mexican spot has a yummy specialty drink called La Fresas (Camarena silver, muddled strawberry, and mint). Grab one of those, something off their large menu and relax with some friends if a low key Cinco de Mayo is your speed. 601 South Central Ave., 213.596.5579, Yxta Cocina Mexicana

Las Perlas
This place has an array of tequilas, but try something a little more different this year…mezcal. The “Puro” is a good way to try it out. Play a few rounds of pool at this festive spot and have a great time! Las Perlas, 107 East 6th Street, 213.988.8355

Marix Tex
If you are looking for a hidden spot off the beaten path (with gorgeous men) head to this spot. Off the main strip on Santa Monica Blvd. grab some of the freshest Mexican food this city has to offer and their low cal margaritas. Hint: you can order a pitcher! Also, on Monday’s margaritas are $3! 1108 N. Flores St., West Hollywood, marixtexmex.com

El Compadre
Home of the “Flaming Margarita” This place has been around since the 1970′s. Not only to they love their authentic Mexican interior, but they have nightly music from a Mexican trio. So grab your date for some enchiladas, flaming margs and a dimly lit dinner. 7408 W Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90046, 323.874.7924, elcompadrerestaurant.com

Velvet Margarita
In the heart of Cahuenga, pass through the purple, velvet curtains into a rocker-esque, Mexican bar. Enjoy their take on a Mexican menu. It’s a little “California” with selections like, Ahi Tuna Tacos. Don’t fret, they have a drink menu to write home about. Hint: if the front is packed, head to the back patio bar. 1612 N Cahuenga Blvd., Hollywood, 90028, 323.856.1698

Spanish Kitchen
This huge spot sits among the club scene on La Cienega. Grab a group of friends and enjoy  a menu that is equally as large as the restaurant itself. They have drinks too, even ones with fresh fruit! Yum! 826 N La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90069, 310.659.4794
